Madagascar has inherited a wealth of ethnomedical knowledge. The first medical thesis written by a Malagasy concerned the study of a plant traditionally used as a trial poison in Madagascar (Rasamimanana 1891), and the following two theses were devoted to an an inventory of Malagasy medical beliefs and practices (Ramisiray 1901; Ranaivo 1902).
